Subject: [Tweeters] mountain finches ID advice?

This week I am going on a hike to the Noble Knob area near Greenwater and up against the Norse Peak Wilderness. I have been here many times before, but have always wrestled with my Finch identifications, especially in flight.
?
Can anyone give me some good basic pointers?
?
Previously I have observed Cassin's Finch, American Goldfinch and Pine Siskins. I always seem unsure when it comes to Pine Grosbeak, Gray-crowned Rosy Finch, Purple Finch and even Crossbills at a distance in flight. I suppose I could confuse Cassin's Finches with some of these. I have also not learned all of my Finch calls yet.
?
Nonetheless the area between Kelly's Butte, Naches Pass and Castle Mountain is a total delight for birding! A great place to learn. Also a great place for Black Huckleberries especially Lake George.
?
I will be sure to?post my observations, and no I am not going by bus!!!
