Since Sept 3rd, I have had Western Tanagers, female (and juvies?) passing through my yard--two on Saturday, with a couple of good pictures. I have had Black-headed Grosbeaks since spring (one male and female always appeared together-pair?). I still had the male as late as 8/31/08--caught on camera. I had two female-like (assumed one adult female, one juv male, by breast coloration) come through my yard on Saturday (Sept 6th).
I have also heard one of the resident Barred Owls hooting the last three days, twice in the afternoons--yesterday it did the whole "Who cooks for you" at about 2:00 pm. Does anyone know why it would be calling in the middle of a bright day? It sure stirred up the crows. The little birds in my yard didn't pay any mind, although the flicker high in the trees left in a whirl.
