Yesterday was a low species day for migrants here on Mt.
Pleasant, Skamania County in the west end of the Columbia Gorge. This was
a good thing since my wife and I were tired after driving over to Windust
Park and back on Sunday in a successful chase for the Varigated
Flycatcher. We weren't able to get out of here until about 1 PM on Sunday
and got back at midnight. Although the variety of birds on Monday were
low, the sheer numbers of RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES was amazing, we had
groups of two to five moving through the woods or visiting the bird baths
all day. I would guess that we had at least fifty nuthatches that we saw
and probably many more when we weren't outside.
Today the morning started out with a pretty good number of
ORANGE-CROWNED, BLACK-THROATED GRAY, TOWNSEND'S and WILSON'S WARBLERS
along with a couple of CASSIN'S VIREOS and numerous WARBLING VIREOS. A
RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER a couple of WESTERN TANAGERS, EVENING GROSBEAKS
and two RED CROSSBILLS were seen. One ANNA'S and RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD came
through feeding on flowers in the yard but did not visit the feeder.
Unseen and unidentified was a bird that was making a loud repeated
descending "peeer" call.
