Subject: Fw: [Tweeters] Report flagged Red Knots

Tweets - on July 26th, 2008, at Bottle Beach, I found a flagged Red Knot (it had a little yellow flag on it's leg, with "247" very easily visible on the flag). I sent a report of it to Brian Harrington at the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences.

It took a while, but I've heard back now that the bird was banded near Guerrero Negro in Baja California, Mexico, in late October/early November 2007.

Way Cool.

Luckily I'd saved the the following email sent out to Tweeters in 2006, so I knew where to report the sighting.

So keep your eyes open, and send in reports of any flagged knots you find.

Subject: [Tweeters] Report flagged Red Knots

Our bird conservation colleagues at the British Trust for Ornithology have asked that we send out the following announcement. Please forward to others as appropriate.

PACIFIC COAST BIRDERS: Please watch for MARKED RED KNOTS. Red Knot populations are in trouble, but size and status of Pacific-wintering population is unclear. A partnership between the University of LaPaz, the British Trust for Ornithology and Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences has marked almost 200 knots in Baja Sur. We anticipate marked individuals could be found anywhere between Chile, Alaska, and eastern Siberia. All have a yellow 'flag' on the upper left leg (each individually identifiable by a 3 digit number) and a smaller red flag with a single "X" on the lower left leg. PLEASE REPORT SIGHTINGS to Prof. Roberto Carmona (beauty at uabcs.mx)with copies to jacquie.clark at bto.org and bharrington at manomet.org

Thanks very much for your help.
