I'm forwarding a message sent a short time ago by Dick Cannings about BC's
first (and Canada's second) BLACK-CAPPED VIREO, caught and banded this
morning at the Vaseux Lake Bird Observatory near Okanagan Falls, BC. This
is one of very few extralimital records of this species anywhere in North
America.

Hi birders:

A BLACK-CAPPED VIREO, identified as a young male, was netted, banded and
photographed at the Vaseux Lake Bird Observatory this morning at about 9
a.m. I'll post pictures. This is a new bird for the BC list, but not new to
Canada (there is a previous record from Long Point, ON, in about 1990). This
bird is a long way from home; it breeds in Texas, where it is listed as
Endangered, and winters in a narrow band along the west side of the Sierra
Madre in Mexico.

The bird was heard giving a distinctive high-pitched mewing and also gave
its characteristic "tidik" call, much like a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

The Vaseux Lake Bird Observatory is located 1 km north of Vaseux Lake and 3
km south of Okanagan Falls, BC, on the west side of Hwy. 97. The
bander-in-charge is Doug Brown.
