Subject: [Tweeters] Seabird talk & COASST workshop 4/17 & 4/18 - Friday
Date: Apr 2 15:01:12 2009
From: Michael Schrimpf - schrimpf at u.washington.edu

Hi Tweeters,

Here is some info on a couple COASST events happening at Friday Harbor in a
couple weeks. For those who have not learned about the COASST program, it
is a great citizen science program that relies on volunteers to monitor
beaches for washed-up birds. They have been able to use these data to
uncover some very interesting things about seabirds all along the West
Coast. I would definitely recommend the program for anyone who thinks they
might enjoy it.

Good birding,
Michael Schrimpf

Dr. Julia K. Parrish will explore the factors affecting some of the most
abundant seabird species in Puget Sound (and beyond!) based on data
collected by over 500 citizen science volunteers part of the Coastal
Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST).

"Beachwatchers and birders wanted for the Coastal Observation and Seabird
Survey Team (COASST)"

Julia will provide a free training workshop for people interested in
becoming part of the Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team. No
experience required! Through an interactive, hands-on workshop, trainees
will become
acquainted with the custom COASST field guide, "Beached Birds", and have a
chance to try out their newly acquired identification skills on seabird
species common to the San Juan Islands. The COASST training provides
volunteers with the tools to monitor for potential changes in the marine
environment and promote stewardship of local marine resources. Currently,
more than 500 volunteers survey over 275 beaches in Washington, Oregon,
California, Alaska, and Hawaii.
