Subject: [Tweeters] Mountain Bluebirds still at the Montlake Fill 4/4/09

They were around until at least 10:30am in the patch of grassland
"lakeside" (SEish) of Waikaikum Lane and westish of Shoveller's Pond.

I think earlier some people had seen them on the other side of the
large pond (water everywhere!) and later concluded they'd gone but I
saw them early and late in the same location.

Sometimes they're off in the distance but at around 8am one came to
within a few yards of the lane for a very nice ID (both females with
gray head and breast with blue rump and wings). And as I'd not read
the list before heading out I though I'd found something new! Ah,
next time, perhaps.

Easiest way to find them is to look for their feeding behaviour with
the naked eye: perching on 1 foot to 4 feet high perches and dropping
to the grass to feed.

Especially when the light is right one of them seems to be much
brighter turquoise on the wings and rump than the other one.

I did notice though after 10am that they seemed to be getting "fed
up": they were perching more and feeding less. Perhaps early in the
morning is the best time to see them?

The Tree Swallows seemed pretty entertaining too (text book fly and
glide in a cirle to return to a nest box). A few seemed to be
fighting over choice nest boxes including a nice pull off the box by
the nape.
