Hello, Thought I'd make note of a few Thurston County observations from this past week:
3 April at the Vail Tree Farm: 1 TURKEY VULTURE, 4 April at Capitol Lake: 2 continuing MUTE SWANS and 55 BONAPARTE'S GULLS; on Johnson Creek Road: a sleek WILD TURKEY, 5 April at Nisqually NWR: both RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD and BROWN CREEPER building nests and a pair of HUTTON'S VIREOS, 6 April at Nisqually NWR: OSPREY, SNOW GOOSE, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 2 TURKEY VULTURES, 3 EURASIAN WIGEON; from Luhr Beach: CASPIAN TERN, EARED GREBE, many BRANT and a couple of RED CROSSBILLS.
There are many thousands of birds visible from Luhr, but as usual most are at a very great distance.
The WHITE-THROATED SPARROW continues at my house in Olympia and on the 4th of April I watched as a fellow released a BOBWHITE at Weir Prairie and promptly shot it with his dog in hot pursuit. As the bird's flight slowed, the dog overtook it and seized it from out of mid-air.
I've placed some new pics on my website of a pair of Olympia EURASIAN COLLARED DOVES and a cooperative EARED GREBE. The grebe was so close to the boat launch at Luhr it prompted one man to point it out to his child and say "look son, a baby duck".
