A short morning of birding around Moses Lake was quite enjoyable with the
summer-like weather.

Early migrants were in evidence with quite a few Ruby-crowned Kinglets, a
few Yellow-rumped Warblers, and several Varied Thrush at Potholes SP. Also
present were a good number of Golden-crowned Kinglets, a single Winter Wren,
several strangely silent Bewick's Wrens, and a threesome of Downey
Woodpeckers (a single female and a pair of suitors).

The best birds of the day were 4 BUSHTIT found along Sand Dunes Road south
of Moses Lake. This is about 6 or 7 miles from where the colony at North
Potholes Reserve was found some years back. It has been at least 2 years
since the last sighting at North Potholes Reserve, and it was feared that
they may have perished during a bad winter. Since last winter was worse than
any I remember in Moses Lake, perhaps the flock has relocated or dispersed
to this new location and remains a small, but viable, population.
