A couple of points on recent posts for birding the Yakima firing (training) center (YTC). The shrub-steppe birding can be excellent this time of year, however I want people to be aware of some steps they will have to go through for birding on the YTC. Assuming you haven't been recently and don't have an active rec card, you'll have to sit through a 15 minute or so safety video and the card will cost 25.00 per person (I think, the fees are new and wasn't in place when I renwed my card last year and haven't done or this year yet). For those that are going to visit the site numerous times in the year, the hassle is worth it and most of us local Yakima birders have YTC rec cards. However, it may not be worth it for visiting birders as most species can be picked up elsewhere in Central WA without going through this hassle.

If still wanting to visit the YTC, here is the link and info. For everything including video, card, check-in etc.. allow about 45 minutes or so and make sure you have spare tires as there can be some rocky roads on the YTC that have resulted in changing flats. Also on the weekends, I believe you can't get a card until 10:00 am so take that in mind as well.

If looking for other places in Yakima to bird. The new Yakima Audubon Wildlife Viewing Guide is helpful. It was 70 in Yakima today, certainly feeling like spring here! http://www.yakimaaudubon.org/yakima_viewing/index.htm

Good birding.
