Jim, we had saw-whets nest in a wood duck box at Columbia NWR in 1997. The
nest was in a willow grove and at least 50 miles from the nearest
"appropriate" habitat. That same year two other wood duck boxes in the west
Potholes area had saw-whets nesting. I don't know anything about initiation
dates, but based on the size of the young I banded that year your saw-whet
might be nesting now.

Tweeters,

I was very surprised to hear a calling NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL from my home in
Battle Ground, Clark County, Washington at about 5am this morning. I don't
have much in the way of evergreen habitat for Saw-whets so I immediately
wondered if Saw-whets ever call during spring migration....anybody know?

I just returned from Panama where biridng was incredible. My apologies in
advance if I accidently post a sighting of a tyrannulet, trogon, toucan,
tityra, tinamou or tiger-heron............ Yes, there were Swainson's
Thrushes too!

Keep your eyes and ears skyward.
