Pilchuck Audubon has launched its Spring 2009 Shorebird Survey of the
Port Susan Bay Important Bird Area. I think today was Day 3 of the
survey. Susie Schaefer and I were assigned Iverson Spit and Triangle
Cove on the east side of Camano Island (west side of Port Susan Bay)
and were there from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to check out the mud as it
became exposed with the ebb tide. The migration has yet to pick up,
but a birder reconciles herself to understanding that what isn't
there on a certain date can be just as important to science as what
is there. Our only shorebirds were nine GREATER YELLOWLEGS and two
KILLDEER at the north end of Triangle Cove. But we had other nice
birds and I was happy to see the public access at Iverson Spit and
its whole tangle of thickets that could be very nice indeed by May
for warblers.
