There are two female (or first-year male) Purple Finches at one of
our feeders as I write this. It is with the largest group of House
Finches (6) that I've seen in the yard for some time. The last Purple
Finch that I recorded in the yard was in November 1998. I almost
didn't look at the House Finches with binoculars, but then I decided
I would enjoy a close view, and there were the Purples right in the
midst of them! Now a Pine Siskin has joined the finch fracas. There
have been 2-3 of that species at the feeders just for the past few days.

The Varied Thrushes and almost all the juncos left during the spate
of warm weather. A Golden-crowned Sparrow and two pugetensis White-
crowned Sparrows (one of them banded) appeared at the same time and
stayed around for a few days. Almost all the White-crowns I have seen
in the yard over the years have been the migratory subspecies
gambelii, so this was also a surprise.
