Subject: [Tweeters] Turkey Vulture phenomenon in Yakima

Hi Tweeters,

For several years, according to people who live in the neighborhood,
Turkey Vultures have been roosting for a short time in the spring in
conifers in a yard in a residential area just a mile west of downtown
Yakima. This spot is pretty close to the geographic center of
Yakima, if you count the Terrace Heights area east of the Yakima
River. This yard is totally overgrown with vegetation and has over
25 large conifers, mostly firs.

Last evening I saw five Turkey Vultures there, though the trees are
so thick there might have been a couple more. Friday night Richard
Repp saw four vultures fly from the trees when they were harrassed by
crows. They soon landed in the trees again.

It is difficult to figure out what vultures would come to this
neighborhood every year. Might just be a convenient migration stop.

Jeff Kozma and Kelly Kindlespire found a Barred Owl in these trees on
the Yakima Valley CBC in January.
