This afternoon we had a male Lesser Goldfinch visiting our thistle
feeder along with the usual flock of American Goldfinches and Pine
Siskins. I got excellent, extended looks at the bird. He had not
quite completed the molt to full breeding plumage but all of the
field marks were there: full black cap, green back, short tail, stout
dark bill, less pronounced wing bars, and noticeably smaller in
overall size compared to the the Am. Goldfinches. We live on the
eastern edge of downtown Olympia.
