I have had no problem carrying my Swarovski scope in my hand carry bag to South America (Chile, Peru) three times over the last two years.
No hassles, no problems at all, either way.
I did have to remove the eyepiece, of course, so it would fit. I just slide it in an old sock to protect from scratches and it works fine.
One thing I did learn from a customs guy in Montana is that you should really register your expensive stuff with customs so they know it came with you from the US originally. I did but no one has ever asked to see it.
