Subject: [Tweeters] Question re: Red-Breasted Sapsucker

Hello Tweeters:

Saturday a Red-Breasted Sapsucker showed up in my small Acer Macrophylla stand (I know, an oxymoron) and has been further excavating a decent hole started by a pair of Northern Flickers who have apparently found a better site in another nearby snag.

I tried to quietly tug away at some pernacious ivy about ten feet away from the tree and the bird gave an loud call and took off. I has returned thankfully, today, to continue its excavation.

I am wondering if anyone has experience with nesting Sapsuckers. The bird does seem less at ease here than the Northern Flickers. I am wondering if I need to avoid the area completely even after eggs have been laid. While this is possible I will need to make some changes to avoid the area. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Carole
