A few minutes ago, as I was driving home I spotted a nestling bird in distress at the side of the road, just a few driveways from our house. It looked vaguely crowlike or vaguely jaylike, with flight feathers obviously growing but unable to fly yet. I quickly grabbed some tools from my house that might be useful in shooing it to a reasonably safe place without hurting it or getting my human smell on it, primarily a soft brush, and rushed back there. It had moved a little farther off the road, and a pair of adult Steller's Jays were perched on the wire above it, calling frantically. I gently got it into a safer place under a bush, and now I can only hope. Life's little adventures.
