First, thanks to the many people who offered suggestions for where to take the window-kill Hermit Thrush I found yesterday.? Everyone else seems to know that The Burke Mus. at UW is the local place, and the Slater Museum for south sound drop-offs.? Some suggested the Audubon Society, but when I stopped there this afternoon, at the Seward Park location, I was informed that they only skeletonize them for educational purposes.? Seemed like a waste for this bird, so I'll take it to the Burke one of these days.
While in Seward Park, of course, I found time to bird, and managed to see a LIVE Catharus thrush, this one a Swainson's.? Also of note were Black-throated Gray Warblers both seen and heard, displaying Rufous Hummers, and truly WOW looks at a Barred Owl.? This individual was perched not thirty feet off the main trail, at eye-level, and giving a full-frontal view, completely unobstructed by leaf, needle or twig.?
Rather than the usual perch in a cedar, fir?or bigleaf maple, this one was in a spindly little leafless hazelnut.? When the owl realized I was staring at it, it turned its face away from me, reminding me of a child who thinks if he covers his eyes, nobody can see him.?
Also present were the remaining three Scarlet-fronted Parakeets.
