It sounds like you had a nice insect boom to entice your hummingbirds out
into the open. I hear mine more than I see them. They are the same size as
the leaves on my trees and when it comes to nectar they are dine and
dashers. Blink and you'll miss them. Listen for what sounds like the
popping of an electrical fence and when they really get going, they sound
like an old fashioned type writer or a telegraph machine.

Although I have always had hummingbird plants in the yard, what really
helped to increase my sightings, in addition to not using pesticides in my
yard, was planting a wall of crocosmia plants, doesn't matter the color of
the flowers (I've had hummingbirds check out my black mister spout). I've
got variations of red, orange, and yellow. The crocosmia plant produces
multiple flowers at one time and with a wall of flowers the hummingbirds
have a lot more to choose from so they hang around a little longer.

I've attaced a link to pictures I've taken of my hummingbirds at my
crocosmia.
