During fall in Cape May you just can?t go wrong by asking around. Local
birding guides with maps and directions are available. Birding is a very big
deal at Cape May and since you?re going with NJ Audubon, you?re even better
off. We had the great fortune to go out with David Sibley in 2004 on a
water tour around the inlets and coves at Cape May and saw and learned a
lot. I?d recommend sticking close to the shoreline and the adjoining fields
and thickets and get out on the water if you can. If you?re with a birder
with good local knowledge its even better.
Finally, do a really good job of checking for Deer ticks when you return
each day. They?re especially plentiful in grassy areas and they?re extremely
small (look like ?moving freckles?). They carry Lyme disease which is
rampant in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions including Cape May.
