I just walked out of the house and looked up at the sky, as I often
do, just to see if there were any birds up there. 98% of those looks
are in vain, but in this case, there was a Common Loon in breeding
plumage, several hundred feet up and beating its way southward for
the winter. It's those moments that make me glad for my interest in
birds.

This is my third sighting from home, far from any water bodies. I
also saw individuals flying over on May 4, 1993, and October 4, 1998.
Even more surprising, I saw a Red-throated Loon overhead on November
6, 1994, probably moving from Puget Sound to Lake Washington.
