Fran,

I checked the Montlake Fill burn area late this morning and found lots of
Savannah Sparrows, American Goldfinches, House Finches, juvenile
Brown-headed Cowbirds, a couple of Northern Flickers, and one juvenile
White-crowned Sparrow. The birds you describe might have been the cowbirds.

Too early for pipits. Maybe in September. My only Red-throated Pipit for
Washington State was one on a burned area at American Camp on San Juan
Island with a bunch of American Pipits, mid-September. This burn might also
attract longspurs and Horned Larks. Keep our eyes peeled.

Hello Tweeters,

Yesterday (Friday) afternoon about 4 PM I toured the "Fill" and
checked the 5 acre burn area (from the 7/29 fire). At the south end east of
the main pond there was a flock of about 40 or 50 dusty olive yellow birds
feeding on the burned area. All the birds looked similar with pale wing
stripes but no striking identifying markings. They seemed significantly
larger than goldfinches, about robin size. Unfortunately I left my scope in
the car, but my bins and a couple of books didn't provide me with
identification. Would appreciate anyone's information on what I saw.

Many
thanks,
