My son and I were able to locate this bird at about 5 pm Sunday. We were at
the eastern-most section of the loop trail, looking out over the newest baby
grebes that Doug mentioned, and were able to spot the bird by looking due
east, midway across the bay. There are plenty of little white spots out
there, and most of them are pond-lily flowers. But only one was bobbing and
whirling around! Mary Bond & Ira Zuckerman, Seattle. Zuckerbond at comcast

Subject: [Tweeters] Red-necked Phalarope at Montlake Fill this morning

Hi Tweets,

At the Montlake Fill at about 7:30 this morning, I was pleasantly surprised
by a juvenile Red-necked Phalarope, a very exciting Fill-first for me!

I lucked into the bird while scanning at the SE point (there is a clump of
about 3 tall cottonwoods here, and some logs set up by the water's edge for
people to picnic). I was watching some Least Sandpipers foraging on the
lily pads, when the phalarope flew a short distance, catching my attention.
I watched it swim and stand on the pads where they formed a border with the
open water of the lake, about 30 feet away. It then flew out and landed on
the open water of Union Bay. If you look for this bird, it unfortunately
probably won't stay long, but I would recommend bringing a scope and
scanning the open water as well as the lily pads.

Subject: [Tweeters] Montlake Fill Bitterns

Hi Tweets,

I am always amazed when I visit the Fill, and that is quite often. I seem to
see something new or very interesting almost every time. This morning not
one, not two, but three American Bitterns flew over the Central Pond heading
east. The first Bitterns I have seen at the Fill. Also the Pied-billed
Grebe, located just north of the big cotton wood grove has at least two new
hatchlings.
