Hello, have been conducting beach surveys from Tokeland to Pacific Beach of late.
On Friday (7 Aug) there was a SNOWY PLOVER 3 miles north of Copalis Beach, where Boone Creek hits the Pacific.
Today (10 Aug) at Midway Beach, there was a nice little showing of 1500 or so SOOTY SHEARWATERS just off shore. A FULMAR was busy dying at the high tide line as 3 SNOWY PLOVERS scampered about. What was certainly much more than 100,000 dead anchovies were washed up on the beach just to the north, and there were 15-25,000 gulls loafing in several huge groups to the north and south. Most surprising was the seemingly freshly dead HORNED PUFFIN about a mile or so south of the Midway Beach access road. It's ready for a museum...
Weird last week was an apparent SPOTTED SANDPIPER north of Ocean Shores, which I flushed several times from the dry beach-grassy sand dunes just up and over from the open beach. I only was able to get naked eye views of the bird as it flew by me, but was intrigued both because of the habitat and several features that struck me as not quite like the Spotteds I see regularly.
