At this afternoon's changing of the guard at the pied-billed grebe nest at
Green Lake (Seattle), it became clear that there are five eggs rather than
only the three I saw last week. This photo:

shows the adults greeting each other; the subsequent one in that set shows
the eggs better.

Yesterday in Lincoln Park, West Seattle, I had the all-too-familiar
experience of once again being humbled by the natural world. I sat for a
long time hoping that the hummingbird I kept hearing nearby would come feed
at the fireweed I had my camera trained on. I eventually got up and decided
that before I headed hope I'd just swing by the hummingbird sound in hopes
of seeing one in a photogenic spot. Of course, when I got there I discovered
that the hummingbird had been announcing the presence of a barred owl loudly
and clearly since I'd sat down!

I'd love to know whether this owl

set), which had a sort of minty-fresh look, is actually the barred owlet
I've been watching grow up in Lincoln Park this spring. It's sort of sad
thinking I won't recognize him any more.
