Tweets, Monday I observed what must be a migrating LAZULI BUNTING, a young
bird or female type. It was drawn to the little remaining water in upper
Scatter Creek at the Mull Street marsh/bridge east of Tenino. An
adult-looking CHIPPING SPARROW was also present, not its normal haunt but
apparently also seeking hydration. A COOPER'S HAWK plus another accipiter
had the swallows stirred up. Still a few family groups around, including ~5
WILLOW FLYCTR, vocal WARBLING VIREO, and W TANAGER. The most unlikely
sighting was a PILEATED WOODPECKER dangling precariously by one leg off the
end of a very thin and flexible branch (less than half the diameter of its
leg) going after a dark fruit/berry. 48 species during the mid-morning's
quick check of the neighborhood. Good birding!
