Subject: [Tweeters] Pied-billed grebe at Green Lake looks like it's panting

Hello Tweets,
At the Green Lake pied-billed grebe nest yesterday (Mon 8/16), I was
surprised to see the sitting grebe holding its beak open for several seconds
at a time, several times (www.flickr.com/photos/trileigh/3835072218/). I
couldn't hear any sound -- though it's always possible that it was making a
call outside my hearing range, I guess. Any ideas?
There are still five eggs in the nest. I had a nice look at the grebes
adding new material to the nest, and covering up the eggs before they left
it unattended for a few minutes.
Good birding,
Trileigh
