Hi Tweets:
After seeing a Yellow Warbler w/ a very green back in Des Moines yesterday, I thought
I'd do a little birding today down in the Kent Valley. It was mid-day today when I
got down there, and I only heard (did not see ) several Common Yellowthroats. I
didn't see any other warblers today in the valley.
212th St mitigation pond - pretty quiet. No shorebirds. A Mourning Dove flew into
the field. A Red-t Hawk perched on a platform in the field. As I got into the car,
a Cooper's Hawk flew. A few Canada Geese, Mallards, and P-billed Grebes in the pond.
A few Barn Swallows flying about. I only heard one Savannah Sparrow.
At Boeing Ponds there were 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS. There were
about 50 American Coots, which included many half-grown cootlets. 2 Northern
Shovelers, 4 Grn-w Teal, 2 Gadwalls, several P-b Grebes including two stripey
half-grown young grebes, and one Ruddy Duck. There were a moderate number of
mallards. I heard one Cedar Waxwing. I heard several Common Yellowthroats which
were never visible. The 50 European Starlings included many juveniles, and all the
stars had dark bills.
Driving along the west side of the Green River down there, I saw about 70
Violet-green Swallows perched over and swooping over the river.
204th St was quiet. A second Cooper's Hawk (it had a shorter tail than the bird on
212th) chased a very-bright adult Red-t Hawk. I only heard one Cedar Waxwing. A few
Amer. Goldfinches flew about. They were present at all 3 sites. Barn Swallows flew
over the fields.
Yours, Carol Schulz
