Hi Tweets:
I went to Thomas Pond this morning, Sat, Aug 22, arriving there in north Auburn at
9:30. I immediately saw 3 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS. Did the same
birds I saw yesterday in north Kent fly 5 miles farther south overnight? A COOPER'S
HAWK flew through.
There is still quite a bit of water and mud at the pond. Other shorebirds at the
pond were 5 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 1 WESTERN SANDPIPER, and another Lesser Yellowlegs.
These two were together sometimes, and were often near the Greaters for good
comparisons. There were 3 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS also. Two GREEN HERONS, an adult
and a juvenile were in the area. From the pond viewing spot along the frontage road
you can look to the left (north) to a tall light pole in a big parking lot north of
277th St. There is an OSPREY nest on the light pole. A 2/3 grown OSPREY juvenile is
in the nest, and an adult OSPREY flew in with a fish. The adult dropped off the
food, and promptly left again.
Thomas Pond is a mitigated area in a big field at the SE corner of S 277th and I-167.
The field is just south of a U-haul warehouse, which used to be called Toysmith.
Drive south from S 277th at the frontage road which starts at the U-haul bldg and
parallels I-167.
Yours, Carol Schulz
