Hi tweeters,

And now for something completely different - a report from somewhere other
than my yard.......

I car camped last night at the northern parking lot (in Skamania County)
near Silver Star Mountain (near the Skamania/Clark County line due East of
Battle Ground) in hopes of hearing some nocturnal migrants. I didn;t hear
much until about 5:15 when the SWAINSON'S THRUSHes became evident. I'm
guessing abouty 125 birds between 5:15am and 5:45am. No other species
dedected during that time. During the night, I heard a far distant sound
that was probably a LONG-EARED OWL but it never called again. There ws a
calling NORTHERN PYGMY OWL at about 6:15am. Birds around teh parking area at
first light were the following:

Red-shafted Flicker 2
American Robin 2
Cedar Waxwing 15
Western Tanager 10
MacGillivray's Warbler 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 5
Black-throated Gray Warbler 2
Wilson's Warbler 1
Black-headed Grosbeak 1
Purple Finch 12
Pine Siskin 2
Red Crossbill 3
Dark-eyed Junco 12

On another note, one of the small ponds (40ft x 40ft) in my Battle Ground
neighborhood held a PIED-BILLED GREBE yesterday. This is the first I've
ever seen in Battle Ground and I wonder how long it will stay. Anybody know
how much of a running start a Pied-billed Grebe needs to get airborne again?

Keep your eyes and ears skyward.

Jim
