Bill Kaufman and I count on Saturday nights at the Wagner School in
Monroe. Last night was our first and I believe the fourth night of
this year's census. We had 2,171 swifts. A small group of about a
hundred or so was there when we arrived at 6:15. A very few went in
early. Sunset was at 8:09 last night and that's about when the swifts
started heading down the chimney with the last bird in at 8:18pm.

An interested and probably local merlin flew in fairly early, sat on
the edge of the chimney while the group of swifts swiftly departed,
then flew off to the west in search of better prey.

There were 4-5 cars of people who stopped to watch the show. Bring a
picnic and come out and enjoy the swirling swifts!!
