Hello Tweeters,
Mike Marsh and I decided to going birdying again in Ocean Shores, maybe
finding the Hudsonian back and also finding the 3 Buff-breasted
Sandpipers. The High Tide was at 3.56 PM .We started on the Sewage ponds, who
I found 1 BRANT GEESE
preening and posed for excellent photos.According to Terance
Wahl and Dennis Paulson "A Guide to Bird Finding in Washington,"his is an
unusual early record for Washington,The date could have moved up by date, but
is listed end of October.
This bird was on the first pond
The last pond have so little water and going to be dredged.there was only 6
Shorebirds 4 Killdeer,and 2 Western Sandpipers.
Hiking with all our gear,we walked on the beach way in the back where I had
the Hudsonian Godwit on Sunday, there was NO BIRDS at all.So we decided since
the water was so low going
on to the other side Thurs. the white tower where the entrance is by
Tonquoin Street to the big Game Range also called Oyehut.
There we found 1 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER,where was the three birds what got
reported? We saw 1 Dog running loose leaving all the many footprints ,It
looked as this birds was flying in different direction escaping from this
dog what was belonging to three birders. On the Canal we had an Adult Female
Hooded Merganser with 5 young .Further down we running in to Greg
Thompson,we was almost as far than Damon Point. We had a lot of peeps and 1
Bairds Sandpiper. Also there where 3 OSPREY all with pink Salmon what there
eating.I got some good flight photo,of the Osprey carrying the Salmon.
And than we walked trying to cross the Canal,it was almost 2.00
PM and the water was to high the cross,we had no chance than walking
back, direction Damon Point,Greg rescue us going to some marshes where the
water was not to high this was going to the Tonquin Exit, where Greg took us
to the Sewage plant to our car.
I mention the Outer Beaches Driftwood ,Marine view Drive and Butterclams to
looking for the Shorebirds who are coming to roost when the tides are
high.So Greg and Mike agreed to join me.Driftwood had a group of Shorebirds
manly Semipalmated Plovers. shorebirds what I ID as Dunlin going out of
breeding plumage ,one bird had quite bit black still on the belly,I mention
that this is an early sighting, but Patrick and I had this early dates
before. But this pecies coming in end of Septemberer,Greg spotted a third
Dunlin with this group, little away from the 2 birds
We went to the next exit Marine view Drive walking out to the beach, from
there we saw in the distance huge group of Shorebirds north flying in the
air,and this was what we looking for.So we went to Butterclam, and we was not
disapointed, the Beach was covert with all the many birds in long lines, but
all close together by there lined up all by species, first row Western
Sandpipers 2000 birds, the Sanderlings what where more than Western some
was still in groups walking the waves 3000 birds.Dowitchers hard telling
since there stayed so close together ,there bill tucked in over
thousand.Black bellied Plovers all birds in different plumage's,some still
in full breeding 1500.
This is the start now for the full FALL Migration started in Ocean
Shores, with much more species to come!!!!!!
I am going to rest up now ,for the next trip to the Ocean,it was a
great day!!!!!!!!!

Cheers Ruth Sullivan
