Subject: [Tweeters] Washington State Park closures

Hi Tweeters,
What Dennis says is true. I thought I'd add a little more info. State Parks received a significant budget cut this biennium and in order to keep parks open the legislature passed a new donation program attached to license tabs renewals. This used to be an "opt-in" donation, now it is an "opt-out". If the donation program is successful, no parks shall be closed. However, there is still the possibility of some parks the Commission deems not consistent with the 2013 Centennial Vision, to be transferred to another public agency that is willing to take over the operations of the park. This has already happened with Wenberg State Park in Snohomish County. Several parks that were on this "inconsistent" list are currently beginning a public planning process to help determine consistency with the 2013 vision and develop future management plans for the parks. For more information about the donation program go to www.parks.wa.gov and look under "donations". For more info about the planning processes for parks look under "planning and new development". Hope this helps!

Tweets,
From what I've read & been told, even if the gates are locked & the restrooms & other facilities are closed up people will still be able to park outside the gates & walk the grounds to bird without any fear of being routed for trespass.

Mt Spokane and Field Springs are pretty attractive to birders from those areas, and Rainbow Falls is a pretty reliable place for Hermit Warblers. Millersylvania and Rainbow Falls are both on the Birding Trail maps, as may be others that are not part of the Olympic Loop and SW WA maps. I agree that it is quite an astounding assortment.

Hi Tweets,

I was just doing some research to see if any of the proposed WA state park closures was going to affect access to Puget Sound Seabird Survey sites and I found quite an astounding list: http://www.wta.org/trail-news/magazine/projected-state-park-closures. Here's a map of those parks: http://tinyurl.com/closingparks

Does anyone know of a more up-to-date list that's available online? I am looking for details on which parks could "moth-ball" when...

Seems like there are a couple parks that could affect popular birding destinations, like Gingko, Ft Ebey and Ft Flagler to name a few...
