Your subject of food cache from birds or squirrels reminds me of an event
of a few years back while living in Woodinville, Virginia. I had a small
baggy of dried banana chips I had purchased from the grocery store. They did
not taste very good and they got put back in the cupboard. A year or two
passed and while cleaning and organizing I ran across those banana chips. Not
wanting to waste them or eat them. I thought, what the heck, let's see
what happens. I sprinkled them out on the ground under the feeder in the back
yard. The squirrels came along ( I had plenty) and at first, sniffed,
nibbled and then ate a couple. Once they tried a few , they carried them all
over the yard, dug holes and buried them everywhere. No need for mulching,
they did a great job wit h that task. I often wondered what they found when
they went back to gather them up to eat.
