A large group of ducks or geese were heard passing through last night
fairly late in the evening about 8PM. It was awesome to hear the
squawking slowly fading away in the night. I was hoping to see them
fly over the moon, but I couldn't get a visual on their direction or
altitude. I thought it unusual.

There was also an unidentified bird heard in the trees nearby. He
sounded pretty big to me - carrying a deep voice - if you will, but
not one that I am familiar with. He had the tenor of a crow, but the
vocal pattern of something different. It is difficult to put to words
the quality of a bird chirp that really wasn't a 'chirp'.

I think the combination of the cold snap (it has been in the 20's-30's
here in Yelm at night) and the full moon makes wildlife very active.
We have had a frost for two days in a row now.

I have read somewhere online (likely from Canada) that Stellar Jays
could be or are responsible for the dispersal of acorns and oaks. I
would love to read more.

Thanks for the input about the Chestnuts and Acorns. Whether they are
being placed out by neighbors as food or are being brought to this
location by other critters (hopefully not rats!) remains a mystery. I
am looking forward to resolving it. I do have mole activity, but I
can't imagine a mole hiding large Chestnuts. There are a number of
squirrels here, too but I have never witnessed them attempting to bury
something this large.
