Subject: [Tweeters] Swan Reserve needs volunteer birders

The swan season is ramping up with more birds arriving daily.
The Johnson/DeBay Swan Reserve, northeast of Mt. Vernon, already has more
than 400 swans using it, and 1 report on a day when snow geese in very good
numbers came for a visit.

What we need: People who will be willing to count the swans, note any
raptors they find and estimate the number of ducks and geese (assuming you
can see them). The information is needed to help WDFW, and the rest of us,
document the use at the reserve. The preferred schedule would be to count 3
days a week. You can count as many times or as few times as you want. Just
let me know if you are interested in participating. You can even do an
impromptu count if you stop by and count the swans. No need to say
Trumpeter or Tundra, this may be very difficult with sleeping, feeding and
flying swans. Please reply offline or call me at 425-787-0258
AND there are now benches at the reserve so you can sit and enjoy the
sights.
AND one more very important piece of news: today the WDFW Commission voted
to keep the JD Swan Reserve boundary intact and as originally intended!!!
It came under challenge by a landowner and another citizen in the area.
After an 18 month effort to restore the boundary, the vote today was
unanimous. This means more security for the Reserve for swans and additional
opportunities for watchable wildlife.
