Also, I did an experiment a few days ago. The temperature started at 0 F
and rose up to 22 degrees before dropping down to 14 degrees by around 3:00
p.m. (time frame of this experiment) during the day (at Snoqualmie Pass).
The feeders were in the sun, which likely helped to keep them from freezing
sooner. All feeders were pulled from the refrigerator and set on the drain
board for about 30 minutes (theory to allow the feeders to warm up a bit
before heading out). Keeping them out of the refrigerator all night would
help the nectar to go bad sooner though.



I experimented with 4 to 1 mixture versus 3 to 1 mixture as well different
types of feeders. 8 oz Saucer, 8 oz. Perky Pet Pinch Waist, 30 oz Perkly
Pet and 16 oz. Saucer.



3 to 1 mixture stayed unfrozen the longest.



The 8 oz Perky Pet Pinch Waist feeder stayed unfrozen the longest of all.
The 8 oz Saucer feeder 30 oz. Perky Pet and 16 oz. Saucer seemed to freeze
rather quickly as soon as the sun was blocked from the feeder (around 2:30
p.m.)



Key things learned, if the feeder can stay in the sun all day, it had a
better chance of staying unfrozen. Obviously this is not possible if a) it
is overcast or b) the position of the feeder is not able to hit direct
sunlight...
