Tweets,

I just returned from a couple of days of winter (and was it ever!) birding
in the San Juans, and witnessed a most unusual Bald Eagle hunting technique.
At San Juan County Park, on San Juan Island, I watched/scoped an adult BALD
EAGLE dive talons-first into the water. It obviously snagged something, as
it spent close to 5 minutes "swimming" (using the wings as propellers) to a
rock grouping. When it finally reached the rocks, it hopped out, and
dragged (with only one talon connected!) a very dead dog onto the rocks. It
took another couple of minutes until the carcass was completely out of the
water, and the eagle could begin feasting. The dog looked to be about the
size of a coyote, and could have been, but color was impossible to judge as
it just looked black from having been in the water.

A truly amazing exhibition of strength and tenacity exhibited by this eagle.
