Twelve birders participated in the December 12th Eastside Audubon field
trip to the Samish Flats, Washington Park, and Rosario. The temperature ranged
from 22-36 degrees and "the sky was cloudy all day." 74 bird species
were seen. The pace was fairly slow and we made a couple of stops for warm
liquids. Highlights included: Long-tailed Ducks at Samish Island; Ancient
and Marbled Murrelets off Washington Park; Black Oystercatchers, Hermit and
Varied Thrushes at Rosario; Western Meadowlarks and one Short-eared Owl at
the West 90. Also seen were 2 Peregrines, 2 American Kestrels, and 1 Merlin
as well as 4 Rough-legged Hawks. The shorebirds seemed firmly grounded in
the ice. At the Rosario Beach area the Golden-crowned Kinglets were on
the ground and almost walking over our feet - sweet! Significant totals
include 13 Northern Harriers, 30 Red-tailed Hawks, and 32 Bald Eagles.
