Forward on behalf of Lindsay Raab, a student at Evergreen
(raalin16 at evergreen.edu). How often have you had the opportunity to
bird Anderson Island? If you are interested, she would appreciate you
letting her know by Friday (tomorrow).

Hello birders,

I am excited to announce that I will be leading a trial Christmas Bird
Count (CBC) on Anderson Island this Sunday Dec. 20th! Please join us for
a morning full of identifying species and counting individual birds.
Afterward, Anderson Island resident Jerry Johannes has graciously opened
his waterfront home for us to enjoy a potluck. Please bring a food or
drink item to share. You can plan for about 10-15 people for the
potluck.

On Sunday, we will meet at 7:30 AM at the ferry dock on Anderson Island.
I imagine that we will count for about four hours (not too long because
we don't want to recount birds).

To those of you going over on the ferry... let's plan to meet at the
Steilacoom ferry dock at 6:40 am (for a 7:00 departure). If you need
more info on the ferry, here is the link:
http://www.steilacoom.org/ferry.htm
<http://www.steilacoom.org/ferry.htm> . I will be driving from the
Olympia/Lacey area; let me know if you live in that area and would like
to carpool.

This is the first CBC ever to take place on Anderson Island. The
National Audubon Society highly recommends that we run a trial year
first to make sure the placement of the circle does not overlap other
circles, and that we can work the logistics and ensure that we have
enough participation to adequately cover the circle. Therefore, our
trial CBC will not be registered online, and will not be entered into
the official CBC annual results summary. However, the data will be
entered into e-bird online.

Read the following (in blue) for more information on how to apply for an
official 2011 CBC on Anderson Island. I am not sure if I will still be
in the area next year at this time, but I am willing to apply Anderson
Island for an official 2011 CBC. Please see

information.

Starting a New Count
Want to start a new count in your area? There are now over 2000 CBCs in
the United States, Canada, Hawaii, the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean,
Central and South America, and the more the merrier! In order for you to
start a new Christmas Bird Count in your area, we will need the
following information as part of the application process between August
1 and September 15:

* The name of your new count, along with the description and exact
latitude and longitude (in decimal degrees only) of the center point of
your 15-mile diameter circle. The lat/long information in decimal degree
format is critical to get your Count set up in the CBC database.
* A good map with the proposed circle drawn on it, along with
other nearby counts also plotted on the map. This is to make sure that
your new count won't overlap with existing circles. Please be sure to
use the same scale for all circles shown.
* General geographic and good habitat descriptions of the area,
including percentages of habitat types, an indication of the vegetation
in each habitat, and why the area is important.
* An assurance that at least 10 participants will be available
every year to do the count, along with a description of the experience
level of the party leaders, to ensure continued good coverage.
* Name, address, phone number and email of compiler. Please note
that an email address is mandatory to enter data.

Please let me know by Friday if are going to participate. And please let
me know if you have any questions or concerns.

I will send out the planned route to those who RSVP by Friday afternoon.
If for whatever reason you don't RSVP, please feel free to show up
anyways.

Thank you!!
