Kayaking around Three Tree Point Sunday afternoon we came across what looked like a dead eagle floating on its back about 30 feet from shore. It appeared only recently deceased, as the feathers were not soggy and the legs were bright yellow. The only apparent sign of trauma was the twisted neck, with the head down and almost next to the back. The bird seemed small, up so close, with white head and just speckled white breast. Checking the Nat?l Geo. Field Guide, the breast looked more like the juvenile white-tailed kite. As the ?kite?/eagle?? floated into shore, several surf scoters, a pair of mergansers, some goldeneyes and a western grebe enjoyed the break in the weather off the point. A little farther north, six harlequins paddled by a spotted sandpiper perched on a rock. An interesting nearly 60-degree day so close to the winter solstice.
