Shadow Lake is at the Bob Heirman Wildlife Park just south of Snohomish.
Many of you may have visited this place.
It is a major night roost for trumpeter swans. Tonight, 400 of them made the
daily visit-- the sound alone places this spot on a must visit.
The flights of ducks leaving the park for night feeding is no less
spectacular, just quieter with whistling wigeon, quacking mallards, vocal
pintials and a few canvasback. Tonight more than 20,000 were observed
leaving near dusk. More left out the other side and were not counted. I have
counted 40-45,000 using the area on a daily basis last year.
Photography in the dusk hours is an issue. Binoculars pop out the white
swans against the darkening sky. Often I hear them calling long before they
are seen.
Hope some of you can go and experience the rain of swans and their bugle
calls echoing across the valley.
