Hello:
The last week of the year brought exciting viewing of swans.
As many of you know, Shadow Lake is a major night roost for swans and day
use for smart ducks. This group is feeding either in the Marsh Road area
near SR9 or around the corner off Elliott Road.
In this group are two neck banded birds: M59 from 2001 lead poisoning
banding study. She is now 8 years old and with her mate.
And the exciting day was seeing M84. This was the trumpeter shot by
vandals (2 guys with no hunting license) at Crescent Lake on Jan 17, 2009.
The swan was captured (after a 3 hour effort), sent to rehab, recovered and
released. Thank you again to all those who helped including WDFW
enforcement, Sue Murphy, and volunteers who stopped to help.
If any of you out there see M84 somewhere else, let me know. Also, M83
is in Whatcom County--another rescue from last winter, thanks to Sue.

And lots of ducks are in the area as well-- bald eagle, red tailed hawk, and
other raptors.

Please remember, if you stop in this area, stay up by the main road. Driving
down to close disturbs the swans.
