During the past couple of weeks, I've had some Pileated Woodpeckers
stopping by my woods on their way down the telephone pole trail on the
street. I hear them announcing themselves and then shortly
thereafter, one or two (Christmas morning it was a pair), proceed to
bounce their way from tree to tree, stopping to peck for insects and
to extract some tasty morsels from a SINGLE suet feeder. 9 a.m.
usually and sometimes around 3 p.m. I got some decent photos on the
23rd and on Christmas morning which I'd be glad to send via email upon
request - New Year's resolution - time for some kind of photo
website! The Christmas pair (male & female) were both, at one point,
on the suet feeder (it has a tail prop), one on each side - pretty
cool! I also have a double feeder with a tailprop which they don't
seem to be using much. I switched locations of the single and double
- I think perhaps the key is "location, location, location" - Last
year they came to the double feeder which hung where the single is now.

For a peek at a pecker, be it Pileated, Downy, a Northern Flicker or a
Red-breasted Sapsucker (saw one several days in a row earlier in
December, during the hard freeze), let me know (email) and I'll send
you the location.
