I am posting this in case anyone out there has information on the case:

On Monday afternoon, December 28, 2009, one adult Trumpeter Swan was shot by
an unknown shooter, and had to be euthanized by the Washington Department of
Fish and Wildlife.

The shooting occurred on the Colville River, at the Valley-Westside Road
crossing about 3 miles west of Colville.

This swan was in a group of three birds including one young bird, and had
been in the Colville area since at least December 22. The disposition of
the other two birds is unknown, although it is fair to assume that they were
also fired upon.

Needless to say, local residents and birders are outraged. The local
birding community has initiated a reward fund, which is already approaching
$500, for the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.

If you would care to help with this fund, e-mail me stating the amount you
would pledge. Money will only be collected upon an arrest and conviction.
I will be talking to Department folks next week on the details of how this
is going to work. They have been unavailable this week due to the holidays.

You can contact your local WDFW enforcement office in Spokane with
information.

Also, if anyone has been observing these swans, please let me know how many
and if in fact they are trumpeters.
