After three days of silence in the mystery 'little owl' department here in
my yard in Eastgate (Bellevue), I just heard it again this morning, tooting
continuously, single toots 2-3 seconds apart from 0633-0638. It has to be a
Northern Pygmy and there was no Western Screech around to challenge it this
time which may have in fact been the case as Jim Acker suggested when *both*
types of calls were first detected coming from very near the same spot in the
backyard woods and ravine a week or so ago. My query on the 14th generated
quite a few responses of which I just want to extend my thanks to all you
'tweets' out there who did so. So, NORTHERN PYGMY it is and #80 for the yard which
now includes five species of owls (Great Horned, Barred, Barn, Western
Screech, and NORTHERN PYGMY). Whoopee!! Hope to glimpse of it sometime, maybe
perched atop something out in the open where it might find itself being mobbed
by chickadees and such. Thanks again everyone!
