Sharpshin.

When I lived in Tacoma clear back in 1967 - 1971 - I had a sharpshin raid my bird feeders everyday and I never saw a cooper's hawk during that time. Since then I have seen many coopers in arizona and just about everywhere including here in Missouri.

The situation has probably changed in Washington State by now but I never saw any. I also didn't see any Merlins then - a bird I have now seen many times.

Vote is 6-1 for Sharpie. The one dissenting vote is quite convincing in favor of Cooper's.

If you are so inclined, here are two photos, both from behind the bird, which flew away as I was trying to come around the front for a photo.

When it flew in and I saw it in the corner of my eye I was thinking American Kestrel (have those on the brain lately) but as I got closer it appeared bigger than that. The coloring wasn't right either. I can't really figure this one out. The yellow eyes must be a decent clue but I can't think of a bird with yellow eyes in the 10-14 inch size range.

Anyone?
