Subject: [Tweeters] How to observe hummingbird nest?

The frequent presence (for at least a couple of years, probably more) of a
noisy hummingbird in the vicinity of a hawthorne by our front door has made
me wonder whether one of those lichen-appearing balls in the tree might
actually be a nest. Then this afternoon I watched carefully and saw the
female alight on a nest. Wheeee!

So now I want to make sure I don't disturb her, but of course I also want to
watch as much as I can.

The nest is about 10-12' from our bedroom window, which has half-curtains
(coming halfway up the window from the bottom) that stay put (i.e., don't
get regularly opened and closed). I've put up a spotting scope in the room a
few feet back from the window, peering just over the curtains, focused on
the nest.

Do you think she'll be disturbed by my coming into the room (lights off) and
looking through the spotting scope? By my taking non-flash pictures through
the scope? Flash photos through the window?

Also, that window has in the past had a suction-attached hummingbird feeder
on it which attracted a regular clientele. Should I put that back up on the
outside of the window for her? Or would the commotion or more hummers upset
the little mama?

Thanks much and good birding to all,
Trileigh
