Hi,I have done loads of work on my native organic gardening, and am going to pull most of my beloved hydrangeas out of the front bed and replace with something more bird friendly. I have one Yew that can go in the middle, good at producing berries, but am wondering about some fruit/berry producers that look nice and don't need a lot of trimming. The goal is NOT to look manicured at all. This is mostly a shady area. I want cover and nesting for them as well. I have a Vine Maple that is getting removed and put in a better spot since it is too close to the house..... I have thought about low growing junipers and ferns, and bunchberry as the ground cover. I don't know how well junipers would do in shade. Plus junipers can grow pretty big, and it would be tricky to prune them after a while. I already have loads of snow berry and salal, so I am NOT wanting them. It is just time to plant more natives in this area. I do have some Oregon Grape I could move, but that gets really tall and this is for in front of a small one story house where there are windows about 5 ft above ground. Any ideas would be welcome.
